Fun Fonts for the Classroom

I don't know about you, but I'm a font-aholic. I love downloading and using fun fonts in my classroom (and Comic Sans, of course. Why don't more fonts have the right style of "a"?)

Here are some of my favorite free fonts and where you can find them (just click on them to get to the link):

If you have never downloaded a font before, it's pretty easy. On my computer I have Windows and all I have to do is download the font, extract the files from the Zip folder, then right-click on the icon of the font I want and click "Install." I give permission for it to download and voila! If that doesn't work for you, there are many other tutorials on websites that are linked here.
Go forth and font!

*Edited link to Homegrown Hospitality Font on 7/15/12. Hopefully it will get you to the right place!

  1. I agree with you about the "a!" Especially with kindergarten or first, Comic Sans is the only choice!
Thanks for sharing these cute fonts!

  3. Thanks for sharing! Since you are a "font-a-holic" I have a question, or need some advice. I teach kindergarten and like to download new FREE fonts. I know that after I finish downloading, extracting, unzipping, etc; they get saved with all my other fonts on the computer's font folder, am I correct? Well when I go to type, etc a new document and go to choose one of the recent fonts I downloaded, --ok here goes my stupid question-- how do I remember or is there an easy way to remember or keep track of the name of the font that I want to use, so that I can scroll straight to it without having to go through or scroll through a zillion fonts just to find the one I want to use, especially since I have so many fonts?? Does that make sense, what I'm trying to ask? I hope that maybe you would have a tip for this? Thanks so much!

    1. It sounds like you might need a Font Organizer or Font Manager. There are a few free ones you can download from the internet that allow you to categorize your fonts (handwriting, bubble letters, etc.- any categories that you create) which might be able to help you sort through the fonts you have.
I personally don't use one- I have a strange memory for fonts and use the same dozen fonts most of the time.
      Hope that helps!

    2. Good, I will try that. I never even knew there was such a thing as a font organizer or font manager. Guess I'll need to look into that. Thank you very much.

    3. Good, I will have to check into that. I never knew such a thing existed. I just like fonts and I like to change up but I never can remember the NAME of the font that I downloaded so I can use it. And after a while- they all start looking the same, if you know what I mean.

    4. Pam, it may seem silly, but one thing I do to help me remember my fonts is to create a new document with the font names in them. I have a bunch of DJ Inkers and Creating Keepsakes fonts, so those are easy to find when I'm typing something because my programs list the fonts alphabetically. When I download some new ones, I type the name of the font IN that font onto a separate document. This way, I can see at a quick glance which one I'm looking for (by name) since it would take me forever to go through the tons that I already have!

      Hope that helps!

  7. Thanks for posting these amazing fonts! I'm a preschool teacher and I create hand crafted yarn signs so I'm always looking for new bubble letter fonts to offer. I am so excited to start using some of these :)

  8. Dafont.com is a site where you can download a ton of free fonts. You can search for a specific typeface, or search by the type of lettering you want, whether it’s serif or sans serif, hand lettered or grunge style. You can also put in your own phrase to see how it looks in a particular font. A lot of these fonts are very decorative and many are handdrawn, so it’s not always the best place to search for body text fonts. Each selection also tells you whether your download is free for personal or commercial use. The download is easy – you get a zip file with the font file inside. Unzip, install, and you’re ready to go.
